i have spent many a day fishing on moosehead lake in the early 60's.i haven't bin back for many years looking forward to going back before it's to late.

After seeing this site, I just had to write back! I loved Rockwood in the summers as a teenager! My Dad, Chester White, bought the old Prudence Marson Camp & Cabins on Moose River in November of 1976. It has since, been resold. I got to see my first Moose, Chipmunk, and Loon there among other exciting adventures! I can still remember my toes turning white when I first dipped my foot in the Moose River. I also loved learning to fly fish. I remember playing pool at night with friends. The crisp Maine air is just awesome. We used to catch crayfish in a trap right off of our dock! I remember walking over the one-lane bridge on the way to the Country Store. I also remember going to a Pizza place in Greenville. What wonderful memories this brings back! I hope old friends will see this and E-mail me.

I used to live in Rockwood and I loved it! I still want to move back someday. I remember when I lived there and how stress free everything was all the time. That was 14 years ago and I bet it is still the same way. I hope to go back someday to live and spend the rest of my days.

My grandparents, Max and Elva Noyes owned Max & Woody's campground on Moose River during the 1970's. I spent many a summer vacation mowing lawns for Mrs. Gaudet, lunch with Clarence Brown and wife, visiting with boat maker Bud Corson and spending all my allowance money at Munsters Tackle Shop. I and my family will be visiting this year (2006) in late August and hopefully staying at Max & Woody's Campground.

Nice site! I tie the streamers and tandems at Indian Hill Trading Post in Greenville. I love fishing in the area. West Outlet is a great fishery and often overlooked.

We had stayed at the Birches for many years and then discovered Tomhegan Wilderness Camps. Although we like the Birches, Tomhegan is a better place to stay. Check them out at www.tomhegan.com or call 207-534-7712. It is far less commercialized, the grounds are much nicer and the cabins are in much better shape. Enjoy Maine the way it used to be. We were also not very happy about how the Birches drives their big boat into the Sacotean River. They scare the moose and make it very hard for the kayakers to enjoy their time. Shame on the Birches! Nature is for everyone. Not just them. They seem to think that they own it.

Just got home from a visit to moosehead Lake . My wife and I took the evening Moose Cruise and had the dinner combo with the Birches Resort out of Rockwood . We saw four different Moose including a hudge Bull Moose and the Dinner at the Lodge was ecellent . Thanks to the Birches Resort and their staff for a great time . I've been going to Rockwood for over 20 years now to my camp on Moose River. There isn't enough that can be said about Rockwood, the surrounding areas, or camp. More memories have been made in this little town than anywhere that I have travelled and I have been around the world. I miss it daily when I am not there. I hope like hell that whatever Plum Creek is allowed to do, the rest of us that would give anything to keep the North Woods as they are, are not forgotten.

My Mom and Dad moved to Rockwood 16 years ago after retirement. While growing up we vacationed there, visiting relatives. Now I bring my children not only to see Gram and Gramps but to take part in Natures beauty. Every one should visit and explore the wilds. Streams to putter in, berries to pick, loons to watch, moose to see. Katahdin Iron Works is a trip worth the time, and the mist of the River in the early morning is a memory you will keep always. Looking forward to another good winter of snomobiling in your area.Trails are always great.[with the help of mother nature and working groomers.] The men on the groomers do a great job.It was good to see the trail from Rockwood the base of KINEO fully opened and groomed. I've always wanted to see Moosehead Lake, and recently passed through on my way from Quebec to Bar Harbor. It didn't disappoint. It reminded me of Lake George, New York; but is bigger, and hasn't been ruined by overdevelopment. Mt Kineo was spectacular; and we saw a moose right on the aide of Route 15/6. I was so impressed that my son and I detoured on our way back to Maryland from Bar Harbor to get another look. We will certainly be back.

Hi! Have personally known your beautiful area and state since 1969. Even though I live on the beautiful Chesapeake Bay, I have been totally drawn to the state of Maine. Personal circumstances have always kept me from relocating permanently. Guess I will have to be satisfied with visiting every couple of years for now. Mt. Kineo and its history fascinates me. Haven't been able to find that much on it.

Hi, I was looking for information about Mt. Kineo as my Grandmother was the wardeness (as she called herself) on Kineo in 1918 and 1919. She lived on the Mountain in a small cabin and used the first steel tower built in Maine to watch for fires. She used to climb over the face of the mountain in order to go to the grand hotel at it's base to get food and water. She carried her water and food on her back up over the rock face. World War I was going on in 1917, and she took the job that year replacing the current warden who was going to war. I was born in Maine, but am a Florida girl. I have lived here most of my life. I do remember going with my aunt and grandmother to stay at some cabins across from Kineo but don't remember much as I was only about 11 years of age. My Grandmother is long dead, and I have just started trying to get information about her stay on Mt. KIneo. I have just now found her journal due to another family member's death. I do remember stories she would tell me, but have forgotten much. I know the tower is no longer standing. Think Squaw Mountain was the fire station when I visited, however at that time the steel tower on Mt. Kineo was still standing, just wasn't being used. My Grandmother's name was Alice Henderson. If anyone knows anything about her, I would appreciate any information. Thank You.

I spent my childhood summers on Pine Island, Rockwood. I climbed Kineo, fished, swam, and loved every minute of it. I haven't been back since I was thirteen years old and would love to return before I get too old to enjoy it. I think one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen is the Lake stretching out ahead of me from Indian Hill below Greenville. I still have fond memories of Malcolm and Dodie Maheu, Bob Steen, the Macombers, Steve and Roberta Sisco and many others. Hope to get up there before I get too long of tooth.

I used to live in Maine as a kid and then moved. I am now married to a Marine and am hoping that he gets stationed in Maine. My whole family lives there and haven't seen them for a long time now.
