SUMMER
If you enjoy the outdoors and nature, the Moosehead Lake Region is a great place for a visit. Forty miles long with much of its 400 miles of shoreline accessible only by boat, you can take a day and really get away from it all. The fishing is always good, the photo opportunities are numerous and the moose are usually out and about.
A hike to the top of Mt. Kineo offers a panoramic view of the surrounding mountain ranges and the pebble beach at its base is a favorite spot for picnics. Shuttle services are available to and from Mt. Kineo, but you may want to rent a boat, and also explore our many coves and secluded beaches, listen to the cry of the loon, go swimming or just relax.
Hiking trails abound in the area, white-water rafting is always an adventure and tubing down Moose River is fun for kids of all ages. Trails for mountain biking are numerous, golfing is available at the mountain and sea plane rides, museums and sight seeing excursions are all within a short distance.
Summer fishing on Moosehead is deep. Trolling with downriggers or lead core line with live bait is recommended but drift fishing is also popular. Surrounding streams and ponds are active throughout the summer, are good for the novice, experienced or young fisherman and will provide a fun day fishing for those brookies. And if bass are your pleasure, nearby Indian Pond is great for a fun day of exceptional small mouth.
Summer fly fishing on the Moose, Kennebec and Roach rivers is rated as some of the best in the East. Matching the hatch is always a challenge!
If photography is your interest, you'll enjoy Rockwood. A hike to the top of Mt. Kineo, Squaw or Spencer mountains offers panoramic views of Moosehead and surrounding mountain ranges. Getting some great shots of wildlife can be as easy as riding back roads, hiking last year's snowmobile trails or enjoying a wildlife cruise. And if birding is a passion this is a great area for seeing loons, osprey, hummers, bald eagles, peregrine falcons and so many other species.
